The outdoor wedding season has arrived, which means that brides and guests are once again looking for anti-kissing, anti-melting, fresh but stereotyped makeup ideas. We asked celebrity makeup artists Min Min Ma and Andrew Sotomayor to provide the best tips for celebrity-style looks that look great in humid, hot weather and natural outdoor light.
“Purple is one of the colors you want to apply it where it should go,” Sotomayor said, otherwise this dark hue will end up looking like a bruise. His advice: “Cream shades may be the best choice to avoid the consequences.”
Another key to purple perfection: choose shiny finishes. “It also brightens your eyes, makes you look more awake, and provides 3D effects.” Try: Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Cream Shadow Stick in Amethyst, $25, sephora.com.
Want shining eyes without shining chaos? Put the little gem in the corner. All you need is some rhinestones (like the one you buy in a craft store) and some non-latex, transparent eyelash adhesives, such as Lilly Lashes Power Liner Eyeliner and Lash Adhesive Hybrid, $20, sephora.com.
When it came time to apply, Ma said, “Less is more. Too much glue will not only stain, but also build up between the skin and the gemstone-which will reduce its durability. I recommend applying light on the back of the gemstone. Apply a little, and then apply directly to the skin.”
According to Sotomayor, the trick to creating soft smoky eye makeup in hot weather lies in the application and layering techniques you use.
First, he started with cream eyeshadow (“I like Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color very much”), and then applied it with a fluffy brush until he got a sexier color. Then, he said, “I just put a thin veil on top of a similarly colored shadow to help it last longer.”
“Rose gold is suitable for a variety of skin tones and all parts of the face,” Sotomayor said. His technique for creating an overall warm metal appearance looks natural: “I like to use various textures to make the appearance a bit richer.”
This means choosing matte rose gold lipstick lips, shiny highlighters on cheekbones, and matte eyeshadows on the entire eyelid, choosing matching shiny shades at the high points and inner corners. Try: bareMinerals Gen Nude Eyeshadow Palette in Rose, $29, ulta.com.
Nothing tells a hot girl’s summer better than a vibrant lipstick. Red is classic, of course, but fuchsia has a more tropical vibe and is basically designed for destination weddings. When it comes to choosing the color that suits you, Ma said, “You want to match cool pink lip color with cool skin, and warm skin with warm colors. Neutral tones can use both at the same time!”
Not sure what your tone is? Our guide will help! PS Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick is $32, and the hue temperature in esteelauder.com is marked to eliminate guesswork.
For cat eyes that look whimsical, cool, and never heavy, consider abandoning the padded version and use a waterproof lining to create an outline.
Sotomayor has a tip to make this process easier: put yourself in front of a large mirror, then “lift your chin and look down slightly. This tends to make your eyelids flatter during use. .” Try: Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner, $8, ulta.com.
It looks luminous is good. Doesn’t it look greasy. Achieving this balance is tricky, especially on wet days. Ma’s secret to creating an “inside-out” appearance is to use a cream-like product that is iridescent rather than shiny. “Focus on the cheeks, temples and bridge of the nose, and don’t forget any exposed body skin,” she said. Try: jane iredale Glow Time Highlighter, $28, dermstore.com.
Let your rosy cheeks become the star of your styling is a shortcut to make you look sexy and romantic. Make oily skin look longer in the sun? This is a bit tricky. Sotomayor’s strategy: “I suggest you apply cream blush first and then press powder blush on top. At First Blush from Carmindy Beauty is a set that comes with both.”
He said, to apply, “The cream can be placed directly where you want, and then gently applied with your fingers or a brush. Then, apply powder blush on it.”
When it comes to a simple, no-fuss style, the full-color appearance is obvious. Some people like to apply lipstick on both the eyes and lips, but Ma pointed out that this usually causes the color to migrate to the crease of the eyelid.
Two ways to make sure it won’t get deformed: Use a primer like Urban Decay Cosmetics Ultimate Ozone Multi-Purpose Primer Pencil ($19, ulta.com) to lock the color in place; or use a multi-purpose product for Keep the lips and eyes intact, such as Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix 24-Hour Cream Color ($19, danessamyricksbeauty.com).
The soft dreamy pink eyelids are all sweet-but there is one thing to note: if you are not careful, this shade will make your eyes look a little faded. This is why Ma recommends applying a few layers of thick mascara so that your eyelashes will really pop and accentuate the shape of your eyes. Try it: L’Oreal Paris Rich Eyelash Paradise Mascara, $11, ulta.com. Not dramatic enough? Also add a circle of eyeliner.
